That is: the people's hoonmobile will get a 660cc Suzuki turbo triple out of various JDM kei mobiles.

First I was like WAT?

Then I went like OK.

Now I'm quite stoked.

Think about it: "add lightness" is the point of a Seven, and a kei engine is about as light as it gets. What's more, several decades of development have made these hyperactive sewing machines rather potent.

From a young Japanese person's perspective, big engines in proper cars are not happening because no parking spot and no money. Yet hormones and need for speed. Combine with a fine motorcycle engine tradition, and you have the incentive and the means for Japanese companies to turn their shopping cart motivators into little grenades. And being Japanese, they're unlikely to blow up in your face.

Sweet! I'd love to get a crazy R500 or something, but being realistic, I'd end up getting the cheapest 7. This just makes the cheapest model that much cooler!

I'm all for it. Give me a super cheap, super light caterham and I will gladly buy one.

I could not be more excited for this slowest, cheapest, lightest version of the ultimate funmobile.

It's perfect!

Sorry: "under £17.000,-"

£17k is $26,053.64 at this point which is wrong and misleading because tax and currency fluctuation.

The real price is bang-on Ford Fiesta ST, or 3/4 of a ToyoScionBaru

What's not to love? This has considerably more power than the 1172cc Ford engine in the original Lotus 7.

I've wanted one of these - a Seven with an ultra-light 3 cylinder - for years! Either that or one with a Mazda rotary.

Man, if they bring that to market in the US for around the price of a Toyoburu (around $25,000), I would be all over that.

This is like an Aprillia RS50... It might only go 60mph, but it will go 60mph everywhere . Potentially the best spec-series ever?

if it has a real ignition... take it over the Fiesta ST.

But at least you can still drive a Toyobaru around on the street when you can’t make it to the track. A Japanese kei car engine isn’t EPA certified so you can’t try to register the Caterham as a street-legal kit car.
